Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to the questions we receive most often at Shift Driving School. We hope this helps, but please contact us if you have any further questions!

What are the most common questions potential students ask about learning to drive?

We often get asked:

  • How many lessons will I need?
    - According to the DVSA or Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, it takes most people 45 hours of lessons to learn how to drive, plus 22 hours of practising before they pass their practical test.

  • Do I need to pass my theory test before starting to learn?
-No. You can start without even holding the highway code! Although it is recommended to pass your theory as soon as possible.

  • What will my first lesson be like?
-First lesson will be more like an interview... asking questions about you, to establish your understanding, expectations,
We  carry out a license check and eyesight check, then we start the ground work!

  • Why is learning to drive so expensive?
Check out our How Much? page, the only difference is we have more regular maintenance expenses/ fuel outgoings... with most repair garages charging £70+ per hour some repair bills are high!

  • Why do we have a Loyalty Club?
We want to give our students something back, by spreading the word about us what else could we need? It helps us and helps them too!

What's the biggest worry or concern people have before starting driving lessons, and how do you address it?

The biggest worry is usually how long the waiting time is for practical driving tests. We are aware of the challenge but its out of our hands to a certain extent... which is why we recommend passing your theory as soon as possible and having a test booked just after your first lesson.
With most practical tests being around 20+ weeks away, our 90-minute lessons a week, plus some extra lessons closer to the test if needed, should ensure you are ready to pass.
